Another week, another Here Be Dragons Livestream! This week, Steven, Nessie and I were joined by the amazing Courtney Mazza to discuss the final four episodes of The Expanse: Season 4!

I was introduced to this series by Steven, and I have had the absolute time of my life catching up and watching the new season. It has truly become one of my favorite shows, and is definitely one of the best science fiction stories ever told on screen. Continue reading

B655E5E8-7005-4FFD-AC0D-4922C80C17A5

It’s been a while, folks. For that, I apologize. But I’ve begun a new chapter, and so too has this website. It is with great pleasure that I can announce I’ve joined the Here Be Dragons YouTube Channel as Co-host, alongside the magnificent Steven Stark and Nessie aka Questing Beast! Aside from being incredibly honored to be asked aboard, I am truly more excited than I can say. I absolutely cannot wait to see what lies ahead.

This week, Steven and I dissected the first four chapters of Disney Plus’ new series The Mandalorian. We moved episode by episode, talking everything from Star Wars lore to the breakthrough of the adorable “Baby Yoda”, and so much more. Continue reading

Concerning The Dark Crystal: A New Journey Begins

the dark crystal logo

I have given my very essence to Thra.

Okay, perhaps not to the extent that many poor Gelfling did at the hands of the evil Skeksis throughout Netflix’s stunning new prequel series The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance. But at least in the sense that the world created by Jim Henson and Brian Froud over 30 years now occupies nearly every corner of my imagination. Continue reading

Concerning an Update

It’s been a couple months now since my first entries on this blog, which was not exactly what I planned when I started it. But things have a habit of getting away from us, and so I’ve gone a spell without writing. I’ll be working on correcting that in the coming week.

In the time since I last wrote, I’ve seen a number of new films, fallen in love with a new fantasy series and begun a journey watching a stellar new science fiction show with new friends. The fantasy series will come first in a new post due in a couple days – that series being Netflix’s masterpiece The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance.

Anticipating “The Dark Crystal”

darkcrystalposterI haven’t had the time as of yet to dive into more of the extensive pieces I wanted to write for this blog, so I’m taking a moment to offer some brief thoughts on my next highly anticipated series – Netflix’s The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance.

I’m admittedly not one of the original film’s largest fans. I think the film is a bit on the slow side and is not quite as engaging from a writing and character standpoint as it is from a visual standpoint. But the latter is where my adoration comes in heavily. The Dark Crystal is a tour de force of mesmerizing imagery. I love watching the old school puppetry at work, and it creates a wholly unique world that is unlike anything else. Continue reading

From Television Show to Cinema-at-Home: How Game of Thrones Evolved In Its Final Stretch

WARNING: The following contains spoilers from the television series Game of Thrones and the Lord of the Rings film trilogy.

I recall reading a review of Game of Thrones’ Season 6 Finale The Winds of Winter that said the episode would have played, in many respects, as a fitting finale for the show. Looking back now, after the final 13 episodes have played out, this observation may have been perfectly on mark.

To be sure, given the divisive nature of the show’s final seasons, I’m sure there are many who wish this was so. But that’s not what I’m talking about. From my perspective, Game of Thrones was a structurally different beast for its final act. While the first six seasons largely stuck to an established pace that had, more or less, something in common with the television format (albeit with more narrative jumping around), the final seasons played more like a piece of cinema. “Now that’s a proper introduction.”

ConofThrones1

Hello again, friends. I had initially intended to make my first post about the structure of the final 13 episodes of HBO’s Game of Thrones (it’s still coming). But somehow, this felt wrong. My welcome post was brief, and I don’t feel like I’ve yet introduced myself sufficiently to warrant anybody even wanting to follow this blog (or to inspire myself to comfortably spill out all that is rumbling around in my head). So, if you’ll indulge me, I’d like to tell you a little about myself. Continue reading

I Am Arranging An Adventure….

Gandalf Art

Welcome, friends, to Concerning Fantasy. That name may be somewhat misleading (as may be the image I’ve chosen to use). To be sure, I will be writing much about the fantasy genre. My favorite movies (and books) are The Lord of the Rings trilogy, and my favorite television show is Game of Thrones. However, the titular “fantasy” of this site extends to the arts of all genres. That is, in the sense that all creative fiction is fantasy – not only the stories set in imaginary worlds.

I’ll be learning as I go, writing for this site. I make no claims of being even an average web designer. I’m a beginner, plain and simple. But I’m hoping, for now, that my enthusiasm will suffice.

The content you will find here will range from reviews and essays on film, television and literature to more informal discussions. Some of these will be brief, while others may take up far more space.

My first entry should drop soon. Where things go from there, we shall see.

Until then, my friends…
